Mereka yang besar di era 1980-an dan awal 1990-an mungkin kenal kisah Transformers, bahkan mungkin pernah membeli mainannya. Tayangan film kartun yang sempat mengudara di sejumlah televisi di AS sampai dengan tahun 1986 ini sempat singgah ke ruang-ruang keluarga di Indonesia. Pada masa itu, anak-anak (termasuk orang dewasa) terbuai dengan kehebatan robot-robot yang bisa berubah menjadi berbagai bentuk. “Trans..for..mers…,” ucap seorang anak dengan aksen seperti robot. Anak itu kemudian meliuk-liukkan tangan, kaki dan badan, lalu berlutut seolah-olah berubah menjadi truk, tank, mobil pemadam kebakaran, pesawat tempur, dan juga helikopter. Siapa yang tidak lupa masa kanak-kanak yang penuh imajinasi itu? Berbeda dengan anak-anak jaman sekarang yang malah meniru adegan kekerasan seperti tayangan Smack Down.
Seiring dengan bertambah canggihnya teknologi di dunia perfilman, membuat film dengan spesial effect yang rumit sekarang menjadi lebih mudah. Film-film seperti X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, atau Superman adalah bukti kecanggihan teknologi memvisualisasikan imajinasi si pengarang cerita. Satu hal yang menarik dari film Transformer versi layar lebar ini adalah perbedaan wujud robot antara versi kartun dengan versi layar lebarnya. Dalam film versi layar lebar, Decepticons dibuat sangat tidak mirip dengan versi kartunnya. Robot-robot Decepticons dibuat mirip alien buruk rupa. Megatron, misalnya, aslinya bisa berubah menjadi pistol (Walther P38 pistol), dalam versi layar lebarnya dibuat berubah menjadi pesawat jet pembom (stealth bomber). Alasannya, produser tidak bisa mendapat hak dari VW untuk menggunakan Beetle. Selain itu, Michael Bay juga tidak ingin Bumblebee disamakan dengan tokoh Herbie dalam film The Love Bug.

Secara garis besar, kisah dalam film versi layar lebar tidak jauh berbeda dengan kisah dalam versi kartunnya yang menceritakan tentang duel antara robot yang baik Autobots melawan robot yang jahat Decepticons. Pertempuran mereka sampai ke Bumi dan menyebabkan masa depan manusia terancam. Sedangkan dalam film versi layar lebar ini diceritakan tentang Sam Witwicky yang diperankan oleh Shia LaBeouf menemukan sebuah peta ke Allspark, sebuah sumber kehidupan yang menjadi perebutan antara Autobots dan Decepticons.
Transformers Generation 1Setidaknya, Transformers versi kartun sudah mempunyai beberapa sekuel dimulai dari Generation 1 (G1), kemudian berlanjut ke ‘Generation 2’ (G2), ‘Beast Wars’, ‘Beast Machines’, ‘Robots In Disguise’, dan ‘Armada’.
Kisah Transformers yang dulu diputar di Indonesia adalah Transformers G1. Agar tidak terlalu sulit memahami cerita dalam versi layar lebarnya nanti, tidak ada salahnya kita membuka kembali cerita lama di G1. Alkisah, sebuah planet bernama Cybertron sedang dalam ancaman. Pertempuran berkepanjangan antara Autobots dan Decepticons telah merusak planet tempat mereka tinggal. Planet itu keluar dari orbit dan terjebak dalam ladang asteroid. Optimus Prime, pemimpin Autobots, membuat rencana untuk menyelamatkan planet mereka. Optimus bersama sekelompok Autobots menaiki kapal ‘The Ark’ dengan tujuan mencari dunia baru demi mengumpulkan semua energi yang bisa mereka temukan agar bisa menyelamatkan planet Cybertron dari kehancuran. Sayangnya, Megatron, pemimpin Decepticons mengetahui rencana itu dan berusaha menghancurkan pesawat Autobots ‘The Ark’.
Pesawat Decepticons kemudian menggabungkan diri dengan The Ark secara paksa. Masih dalam pertempuran, Optimus Prime memutuskan menghancurkan ‘The Ark’ di planet Bumi untuk mengalahkan Decepticons. Kedua pesawat itu memasuki atmosfir bumi lalu terpisah. Pesawat Decepticons jatuh ke laut dan The Ark jatuh ke pegunungan. Selama 4 juta tahun kemudian, pertempuran terhenti. Tahun 1984, gunung tempat jatuhnya ‘The Ark’ meletus dan menghidupkan kembali komputer di ‘The Ark’, Teletran-1. Karena mengalami kerusakan, komputer ini malah ‘menghidupkan’ kembali Autobots dan Decepticons.
Komputer membentuk mereka (beradaptasi) sesuai dengan objek yang ada di bumi (mobil, motor, benda-benda lainnya) namun bisa berubah kembali menjadi bentuk asli mereka yang berbentuk robot. Autobot dan Decepticons kembali berperang sambil terus berharap siapapun di antara mereka bisa kembali ke Cybertron. Bumi menjadi tempat pertempuran dan petualangan baru dimana robot-robot baru dari kedua belah pihak juga bermunculan. MLP (Berita Indonesia 39)

OPTIMUS PRIMEDia adalah pemimpin Autobots yang rela memberikan nyawanya untuk melindungi semua kehidupan termasuk kehidupan di bumi. Prime adalah yang terkuat dan terpintar dari semua Autobots. Meski di film ini dia masih muncul dalam bentuk truk besar, cat merahnya yang klasik diganti dengan cat biru bergambar jilatan api.
IRONHIDEIronhide dikenal sebagai bodyguard dari Optimus Prime. Meski demikian, dalam kenyataannya, Ironhide lebih sering bertempur sendirian bak pahlawan tanpa Prime. Ironhide memiliki hubungan yang baik dengan manusia sekutu Autobots sekaligus melindungi mereka. Dulunya robot yang berbicara dengan logat selatan ini berbentuk van Nissan berwarna merah, sekarang truk pickup GMC berwarna hitam.
JAZZJazz dikenal sebagai robot yang keren dan trendi. Gaya dan seleranya yang tinggi ditunjukkan dengan pilihan penyamarannya. Sesulit apapun misi yang diembannya, Jazz tetap tenang. Sikapnya yang mudah berbaur dengan lingkungan dan kreatif mengambil keputusan, membuatnya menjadi tangan kanan Optimus Prime yang sangat penting. Ia mengambil bentuk Martini Porsche 935 Turbo di serial kartun dan Pontiac Solstice di film.
BUMBLEBEEIa merupakan ‘adik kecil’ dalam kumpulan Autobots, yang selalu berusaha membuktikan bahwa dirinya adalah robot yang lebih kuat dibandingkan robot-robot yang lebih besar darinya. Akibatnya, ia sering nekat menantang bahaya. Karena bentuknya yang kecil, ia sering diutus menjadi mata-mata di tempat-tempat yang tidak bisa dimasuki oleh Autobots lainnya. Bumblebee menjadi inspirasi bagi robot-robot muda lainnya karena ia selalu mengikuti perintah seniornya dan tidak pernah melawan. Di serial kartun dia adalah VW kodok berwarna kuning, tapi di film dia muncul sebagai Chevy Camaro 2007.
RATCHETRatchet adalah kepala robot medik Autobots yang memperbaiki robot-robot yang rusak dan terkadang menciptakan robot baru. Biasanya dia muncul dalam bentuk ambulans, tetapi di film dia menjelma menjadi Humvee.
D E C E P T I C O N S
MEGATRONIa adalah pemimpin kejam dengan kemampuan dahsyat. Tidak seperti tokoh penjahat dalam cerita fiksi lainnya, Megatron tidak gila. Ia memang agresif dan haus kekuasaan, namun ia masih berpikir rasional atas setiap tindakannya. Menurut spesifikasi kemampuannya, Megatron tidak mempunyai kelemahan. Namun, ia mempunyai kebiasaan buruk sering mundur dari pertempuran sekiranya ia mulai kalah, padahal secara keseluruhan, ia masih memenangkan pertempuran. Faktor lain yang bisa membuatnya kalah adalah hubungannya yang tidak harmonis dengan pasukannya, salah satunya Starscream. Aslinya Megatron bertransformasi menjadi senjata atau tank, tapi di film menjadi jet pembom.
STARSCREAMRobot sombong yang selalu mempertanyakan kepemimpinan Megatron. Meski ia lebih cerdas daripada Decepticons lainnya, kasar dan kejam, ia juga seorang pengecut. Ia tidak berani mengkudeta Megatron bila tidak didukung oleh Decepticons lainnya. Dia bertransformasi menjadi pesawat Stealth F-22 Raptor.
BLACKOUTIa dicatat sebagai robot yang sering kabur jika nyawanya mulai terancam. Blackout bertransformasi menjadi heli Pave Low MH-53 yang panjangnya 88 kaki. Ini heli terbesar militer dan dapat mengangkut Decepticons.
FRENZYDecepticons kecil yang berperan sebagai mata-mata. Frenzy memiliki kemampuan melemahkan kekuatan serangan yang berbasis suara.
BRAWLBrawl awalnya adalah salah satu dari lima robot penjahat di Decepticons yang mencoba mencelakai Megatron di Cybertron. Singkat cerita, Brawl akhirnya tunduk di bawah perintah Megatron. Brawl memiliki emosi yang meledak-ledak. Dia bisa berubah menjadi tank.
BONECRUSHERTadinya dia adalah anggota Constructicons. Sejatinya ia adalah seorang petarung dan berspesialisasi dalam tugas-tugas yang menghancurkan. Bonecrusher berubah menjadi mobil anti ranjau Buffalo.
BARRICADEBentuknya mobil polisi. Berperan sebagai agen Decepticons yang menyamar.
SCORPONOKTangan kanan Megatron yang setia. Dia bisa berubah menjadi kalajengking raksasa."
